CHAPTER XII

“What the hell’s going on?” Kimbr asked in a furious whisper when I had finally reappeared in the attic.

“My brother is here,” was all I could think to say. Not that that explained the depth of shit we were now in.

“Ok,” Kimbr said, slowly. “So?”

“So, he’s arrested my father. For treason, and he’s here to train a whole new batch of Guards. Apparently, they’re not overly happy that the current set haven’t managed to find you yet.”

Kimbr took a breath, peering down the stairs.

“Ok.”

“Ok what?”

“I’ll go,” she said, packing up the piles of junk she had accumulated around her and beginning to pack it back into the case.

“What? Go where? You need to stay here until Mae gets back. You can’t just wander around the island.”

“So, I should stay here, under the same roof as someone who was sent here specifically to kill me?”

“You stayed while my father was here.”

“But he wasn’t sober enough to catch the clap.”

As she calmly placed the books, tobacco and bottles back into the bag, my hands began to flutter at my sides. Kimbr’s arrival had jolted me from a lazy sleep I never realized I was in. She stood before me, unafraid, unforgiving, and I desperately wanted to be the same. To be something more.

“What am I supposed to do now?” I had no idea how to smooth the jumble of my thoughts.

“Whatever you want,” Kimbr said, exasperation clear in her voice. “Look, you’ve lived an average life. You’ve worked an average job, a cog in the machine, another pair of hands. You’re replaceable to these people, nothing special. So, you can either stay here, forget you ever saw me, or you can do something else. Something that actually matters.”

The clothes I had lent Kimbr were slightly too big, and her shoulders threatened to escape the loosened seams of the green coat. Her eyebrows raised, waiting for my answer. Before I could even think about it, the words flowed out in a sob. “Where are we going?”

In the end, Kimbr decided bribing the sisterhood was her best option. And so once again, I found myself shivering in the darkness in a strange and unfamiliar place. I was exhausted and sore, I just wanted to collapse into my own bed, stretch out the cramping in my calves. Thoughts of Ace and my father forced their way, uninvited, into my exhausted mind. Had my father really broken the rules? Shaking away the guilt I couldn’t explain, I waited. Kimbr had forged on ahead, in an attempt to coax some help from her contact in the Sisterhood. I was too tired to argue and simply sat back, keeping watch. From here I could see two of the three guard towers in this island, the gravelly path a few feet ahead would warn me of incoming enemies.

I was beginning to wonder if I had made the right choice. I could easily be at home, sat in front of the fire, reminiscing with my brother and ingratiating myself to what might be one of the most powerful people in my orbit.
